Resurrection Encounters – Five Places Jesus Wants to Meet You

Day 2

Read:
Luke 24:13-35
Road to Emmaus

Studying the life and person of Jesus never ceases to amaze me. I love how we can revisit the same stories we’ve heard all our lives and receive new revelations each time.

Such as the account of the disciples on the road to Emmaus (Luke 24:13-35). This is one of those stories that brings me new insights every time I reflect on it.

Imagine the distress and confusion these disciples must have felt after the events of that week–grappling with shattered hopes and uncertain futures. We read that they were talking about everything that had happened (verse 14) and that their faces were downcast (verse 17).

I get this. When our son, Zac, fell terminally ill in a matter of days, Jenny and I kept asking, “How did this happen?” and were reliving the traumatic moments in the ER. We also couldn’t figure out “what now?” as we tried to piece together our new reality.

Traumatic events can leave us disillusioned, lost, and unsure of the future.

But Jesus wants to meet us in that place, just as he met these two disciples who could not figure out how to put their lives back together after their visions and dreams were ripped away. Jesus seeks them out in the midst of their dashed hopes and disillusionments.

Just like those two disciples, do you feel like something was ripped away from you? Maybe something you identified with and brought meaning and structure to your life?

If so, I encourage you to start talking to Jesus about it, like the two disciples did. Jesus pretended not to know what they were talking about (verses 18 and 19). “What things?” He asked.

Jesus asks you today, “What things are pressing on your heart so heavily that you don’t see a way forward?”

Share them with Him!
