Why do we contribute to Mission Giving? A few women in Boston realized they needed to look beyond their local surroundings and see a larger vision of making a difference as they responded to the stories of women in India who had no medical care…they found it unacceptable and did something about it…sending a doctor to treat the women and an educator to start a school…they followed Christ’s call to go out into the world.
It is this larger vision of mission that defines United Methodist Women and makes each Unit far more than the “women of the church” group…UMW women care about and understand that mission has to go beyond our local “what we can see” to be effective, it has to touch and help women and children and youth locally, nationally, globally. The nature of many of our missions is powerful because many are not just “giving things/money” to women but offering them the skills, tools to take charge of their lives…we teach to fish rather than giving the fish.
The total program of United Methodist Women and the Women’s Division is mission.
This includes:
- Individual growth (spiritual enrichment, education for mission, social issues awareness, leadership development)
- Schools and workshops
- Support for mission programs and projects throughout the U.S. and around the world through the General Board of Global Ministries.
“Through undesignated giving, members of United Methodist Women provide a broad base of support for mission. Consistent and faithful giving through undesignated channels ensures continuity of ministry with women, children, and youth.
Individual undesignated giving, when enhanced and multiplied by the giving of many others, enables a full and consistent response to human need. It connects and involves all members with mission programs and projects. Giving together in community, as United Methodist Women, communicates to the recipients that nearly 1,000,000 women care. Undesignated giving makes it possible to respond to emergencies and to explore new and experimental areas of mission.”
Excerpts From: FINANCE HANDBOOK, United Methodist Women’s Handbook: 2009-2012
Though the mission is varied, the financial costs differ, and the persons involved are many, our commitment is to the gospel of Jesus Christ and the mission it demands of us. Like the women in Luke 8 who traveled with Jesus and provided resources, UMW members are called by God to be in mission by proclaiming the good news of Jesus Christ and by sharing God’s gifts.
